Hauschel's pitching and Alvord's grand slam propels No. 19 Barton to 10-0 run-rule victory over No. 3 Cowley
For the second time in two weeks, the No. 19 Barton Community College baseball team took down No. 3 ranked Cowley College behind a 10-0 eight-inning run rule victory on Tuesday afternoon at Lawson-Biggs Field.
The Cougars rode Braden Hauschel's six-plus inning shutout performance on the mound while Hunter Alvord's two-out fourth inning grand slam put Barton up 8-0 followed with a run in the final two frames to complete the run rule win.
Completing the two-game sweep in the home and away series, the Cougars win their fifth straight in the series improving to 32-8 on the season while the loss snaps the Tigers nine-game winning streak falling to 31-8 overall.
Winners of 14-straight, Barton returns to Jayhawk West play on Thursday afternoon hosting the opening two-games of the four-game weekend series with the Beavers of Pratt Community College. First pitch for the series opening doubleheader is slated for 1:00 p.m. from Lawson-Biggs Field with the final two games coming Saturday at the newly resurfaced Stanion Baseball Field.
Hauschel worked the opening 6.1-innings and was part of his second shutout of the season. The freshman starter tossed a trio of clean 1-2-3 innings while dealing with runners in scoring position twice. Hauschel's first threat came in the first following a one-out walk and two-out single before facing back-to-back one-out singles in the fourth. Hauschel's day concluded succeeding back-to-back one out walks in the seventh.
Hauschel allowed four hits over his 6.1-innings. He struck out four and walked three to improve to 4-1 on the season and extend his consecutive scoreless streak to 13.1-innings.
Escaping the two-on and one-out jam in the seventh, Eli Lang operated around another threat in the top of the eighth inducing a two-out bases loaded fielder's choice in preserving the shutout. Lang finished the final 1.2-innings in relief permitting two hits and a walk.
Barton started giving Hauschel some offensive support in the second inning with four runs. John Connors leadoff walk opened the scoring crossing on a Tiger error. A trio of singles over the next four batters added to the advantage with Barrett Donaldson's RBI single and Tate Blasi's 2 RBI two-out single increasing the advantage to 4-0.
Production from the bottom of the lineup organized Barton's four run two-out rally. Donaldson's second single of the game initiated the two-out rally with Kyle Graves' single ensuing flipping the lineup to the top of the order and Blasi loading them up reaching on a fielder's choice.
Facing his former team and ahead in the count 3-1, Alvord produced his lone hit of the day launching a no-doubt grand slam to the left field hill for his team leading 10th home run of the year making it 8-0.
Connors leadoff blast in the seventh for his fourth home run of the year and an eighth inning walk-off bases loaded wild pitch adding the final touching's in the 10-0 victory.
Blasi and Donaldson orchestrated the lone multi-hit performances leading Barton's eight hits finishing 2-for-4 with 2 RBIs and 2-for-3 with an RBI respectfully.
Standing at the plate when the final run scored off the wild pitch, Ayden Hadley had his season long hitting streak of 13-straight games snapped finishing 0-for-3 on the day.
