Butler soccer picked up its first shutout of the 2017 season with a 3-0 win in the home opener over Rose State (Okla.) on Friday afternoon.
The seventh-ranked Grizzlies (2-0 overall) received a pair of goals from freshman forward Erin Akin and sophomore goalkeeper Elena Garcia earned her fourth career shutout.
Akin broke the scoreless tie in the 40th minute by tapping in a pass from Aylin Torres into the left side of the goal.
Butler added two second-half goals in the 49th minute, beginning with a corner kick header by Melonie Baca to go up 2-0. Just 28 seconds later, Akin slotted a ball inside the left post unassisted for the final Grizzly goal.
Garcia (2-0) made six saves, which included a diving stop to her right on a penalty kick in the 66th minute by Rose State's Alexis Sanders.
Butler outshot Rose State 19-6 for the contest and held a 10-2 first-half margin. The Grizzlies also had a 7-3 advantage on corner kicks, which resulted in one goal.
The Grizzlies will host No. 16 Northern Oklahoma-Tonkawa on Sunday in a 7:00 p.m. kickoff from BG Products Veterans Sports Complex.
