Men's Basketball Win Over #23 Hutchinson
FHNW Men's Basketball defeated the no. 23 ranked Hutchinson Community College Blue Dragons on Saturday, 75-61.
The first half would be an intense back-and-forth affair with Tech quickly getting out to an early lead, with the score at 7-2 at the first media timeout. The Blue Dragons would slowly chip away at Tech's lead, coming within one point just before the 10-minute mark and then briefly taking the lead, 20-19, with 8:36 remaining in the half. The Tigers would quickly tie up the game before taking the lead as both teams would continue to exchange leads for the remainder of the half, with Hutch leading at the half, 31-29.
In the second half, FHNW would quickly take back the lead, with Chase Harris draining a three-pointer to put the Tigers up by one, 34-33. Both teams would continue to exchange buckets, with Fort Hays Tech managing to stay just ahead. Hutchinson would eventually tie the game up, 49-49, with just under 10 minutes left to play. The Blue Dragons would continue to threaten Tech's lead, with the score being tied up again, 54-54, at the six-minute mark. However, the Tigers remained undeterred, continuing to find ways to score as Hutchinson's offense slowly lost steam. Fort Hays Tech would end up outscoring the Blue Dragons, 21-7, to close out the game with a final score of 75-61.
Looking at the stats, it's clear that the Tigers just flat-out shot the ball better than the Blue Dragons, shooting 48.1% from the field while also shooting 40.9% from behind the arc. Another clear difference was in rebounding, with the Tigers grabbing 42 rebounds, compared to Hutch's 28 while also scoring 11 second-chance points.
Chase Harris and Kalike Sharpe would lead the way in scoring for Tech with 23 and 16 points, respectively. Harold Thompkins would also contribute for the Tigers, scoring 10 points and grabbing 7 rebounds.
