Highland Softball Drops Doubleheader at Cowley

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Highland softball squared off with Cowley on the road on Tuesday and suffered the sweep as Cowley picked up the 10-5 and 9-1 wins over the Scotties.

The losses send the Scotties to 19-9 on the season and 8-4 in KJCCC action as Highland gears up for two more Conference doubleheaders.

Game one saw Cowley take the early lead by plating a run in the bottom of the first inning and then tacked on another run in the second and third to lead 3-0 before the Scotties broke through offensively. In the top of the fourth Highland got on the board in impressive fashion as Allyssa Griggs doinked a ball of the top of the fence and over for a solo home run. Scotties followed that up with five of the next six batters reaching safely via a hit including RBI singles by Elizabeth Hays, Isabella Konieczka and Cassidy Greer to swing the Scotties in front 4-3.

Cowley answered in the bottom of the fourth with back-to-back home runs with the first being a two-run shot and thus giving the Tigers a three half inning and pushing them in front 6-4. Alyssa Wesley drew Highland back to within one on a solo home run in the top of the fifth making it 6-5 but Cowley did the rest of the scoring with four in the bottom of the fifth and ultimately took game one 10-5.

In the loss the Scotties had a 3-4 game by Wesley with a home run, run scored and RBI, while getting a 2-4 game by Konieczka with an RBI. Inside the circle both Bailey Lacy and Sarah Bond pitched giving up 10 runs on 11 hits including a pair of home runs.

Game two also saw the Scotties have to climb from behind early as Cowley plated three runs in the bottom of the first inning and added to that with three more in the second, two in the third and one more in the fourth getting two more home runs. Highland got on the board in the second with a leadoff solo home run by Griggs her second of the day, while that was it for the Scottie scoring has Highland had just two other hits in the game and only four other base runners outside of their three hits. Cowley took the 9-1 win in five innings.

Wesley was on base twice reaching on an error and recording a single, while Griggs had the home run and Konieczka had an infield hit and reached on an error. Kelly Uthe was inside the circle in the contest giving up nine runs in four innings.

Scotties look to keep the season rolling on Thursday, April 11th when they host #12 Johnson County for a KJCCC doubleheader starting at 1:00pm and then travel to Fort Scott on Saturday, April 13th for more KJCCC action.
