
OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The Johnson County softball team slugged its way to a doubleheader sweep at Highland on Tuesday. The Cavaliers rolled to a 13-1 victory in the game one followed by 10-1 win to complete the sweep.
Maddie Murray was the hitting star for Johnson County. The freshman catcher went 3-for-4 with a double, home run, two runs and five RBI in the opener, and was 3-for-3 with two homers, two runs and five RBI. For the series she hit .857 (6-for-7) with a double, three home runs, four runs and 10 runs driven in.
Sophomore first baseman Aspen Burgardt also had a big series going 5-for-7 (.714) with four doubles, three runs scored and four RBI. Her four doubles upped her career total to 51, 10 more than the previous career leader at JCCC, and third-most ever in Kansas Jayhawk Conference history. She also now tied with former JCCC All-American Kelly Gartner for the most RBI all-time with 123.
In the opener, freshman outfielder Katie Kolarik ripped a single and two doubles and drove in four runs. Sophomore outfielder Haley Bryant and freshman DP Lily Hans each collected three hits as well, and freshman outfielder Janelle Lang collected three singles in the second game.
As a team the Cavalier rapped out 34 hits against Highland, including 13 for extra bases.
Sophomore Brielle Dee picked up the win in game one. The sophomore right-hander allowed one run off four hits, walked three and struck out two batters. Freshman right-hander Elsa Carrillo pitched the final inning of scoreless ball, allowing two hits with two strikeouts.
Jalin Lavers logged her 10th complete game of the season, improving to 11-4 overall. The sophomore right-hander allowed a run off three hits and struck out six batter over five innings in the circle.
Johnson County (26-13/13-3) are currently in a tie for second-place in the conference standings with two doubleheader series remaining at Allen (19-22/7-9) on Saturday, April 26 and against Hesston (2-23/0-14) Thursday May 1.
