Lady Tigers split doubleheader at No. 17-ranked Johnson County
In a battle of two of the top teams in the Jayhawk Conference Eastern Division, the Cowley College softball team split a doubleheader at No. 17-ranked Johnson County on Thursday in Overland Park, KS. The Lady Tigers won the first game 6-2 before losing the nightcap 3-1.
Cowley is now 23-11 overall, while Johnson County is 18-11. Both teams are 5-1 in the conference, one game behind conference co-leaders Kansas City and Neosho County (6-0).
In game one, sophomore Mikah Vann tossed a complete game to improve her record to 13-4. Vann allowed only two runs in the seventh inning, and Cowley got a three-run triple from Kanon Goji and a solo homer from Taverli Tennant in the win.
"Mikah had a great day and kept the Johnson offense guessing," Cowley head coach Jenny Hoyt said. "We got a couple of big hits when we needed them in game one, which led us to a good win."
The tables were turned in game two as Johnson County pitcher Jalin Lavers held Cowley to three hits in the 3-1 Cavalier victory.
"Game two, I felt that our offense could have done better; we just didn't get the job done," Hoyt said.
Lady Tiger starting pitcher Ezra Arredondo allowed six hits and three runs in six innings pitched.
Cowley's doubleheader at Independence on Saturday has been moved to Monday at 2 p.m. The Lady Pirates are 4-16 overall and 0-4 in the conference.
"Moving forward, we have to keep the foot on the gas and know if we get the momentum of game one, then keep the pressure on them and go get the second one," Hoyt said.
