Just three days after Mike Helmer got his 300th win as the head coach of the Butler Grizzlies women's basketball team, the Grizzlies picked up another victory at the Power Plant on Saturday, beating Seward County 84-66, to stay undefeated on the season.
The thirteenth ranked Grizzlies improve to 7-0 on the year and 2-0 in conference play. The Grizzlies win their fourth game at home, and are now 41-3 over the last four seasons at the Power Plant.
It was a closer game than the score would indicate. Seward kept themselves in it, as it was a one possession game well into the third quarter. But the Grizzlies ended the quarter on an eight point run to take an 11 point lead into the last session, and they were able to pull away from there.
Four Butler players finished the day in double digits, led by Kaylee Nero's 17 points. Ashlei Kirven finished with a double double for the second straight game, finishing with 15 points and 13 rebounds. Emily Mandamin shot 3-6 from three point range and scored 11 points. Cymirah Williams led the team with four assists as the Grizzlies combined for 20 on the night.
Butler's defense dominated the game, holding Seward to 29% from the field, and just 19% from three point range. The Grizzlies forced 21 turnovers and scored 24 points off of those turnovers. Williams locked down the Saints all night with five steals. The Grizzlies also outrebounded Seward, 47-27. Kirven's 13 led the Grizzlies, and Kamiyah Lyons and Kaylee Nero both totaled seven boards.
The Grizzlies will hope to remain unbeaten when they travel to Goodland, Kansas, for another conference matchup against Northwest Kansas Technical College on Wednesday, November 24.
