Broncbusters smoke Dodge; advance in Region VI Tournament
Dodge City, KS-Belinda Hendrix's team was on a mission.
Yina Ballesta Vargas tossed a complete-game gem, Daryelin Rivas Chavez hit a walk-off grand slam, and the Broncbusters beat Dodge City, 13-2 in the opening round of the Region VI Tournament at Legends Park on Friday afternoon. With the win, Garden City advanced to play top-seeded Butler in the second round at 4 p.m.
For the most part, Vargas was economical, throwing just 69 pitches over six innings. She struck out eight and allowed just two earned runs on six hits to earn her 15th win of the season.
After striking out the side in the first, Vargas worked around a single and a walk in the second. An inning later, she did damage control by fanning Josie Oakley on a rise ball to end the frame. She gave up a run in the fourth and one in the fifth on Riley Moore's RBI single.
The Conquistadors spotted Garden City a 7-0 advantage. They scored two in the first and two in the second before Alyssa Santana drilled a two-run homer in the third. Mara Vonk smoked a double to left in the fourth, and Santana ripped an RBI extra base hit to left-center to make it 9-1.
After the Conquistadors scratched a run across in the fifth to avoid the run rule, Chavez sat on a breaking ball and drilled a game-ending grand slam in the sixth.
Dodge City starter, Jordyn Boxberger lasted only 2 1/3, allowing six runs on nine hits.
