Broncbusters beat Seward on walk-off single in extras
Garden City, KS-Garden City needed this one badly.
Sawyer Marshall delivered the game-winning RBI single in extra innings, Jace Reid tossed an eight-inning gem, and the Broncbusters beat Seward County, 2-1 in game three on Saturday.
Garden City, which outslugged the Saints, 10-3, won their first conference game since March 27 to improve to 19-25 overall and 6-17 in the Jayhawk. Meantime Reid allowed only three hits in an absolute masterpiece, one that earned him his first victory of the season.
In a defensive deadlock, the Saints finally broke through in the sixth when Brooks Barber hit a sacrifice fly to put the visitors up, 1-0.
Garden City spoiled a chance to tie the game in the bottom half when they had two on and only one out. But Karson Evans bounced into a force play and Joshua Miller grounded out to second to end the inning.
After Reid worked a one-two-three seventh, Josh Oller's offense went to work in their half. With one out, Roy Higinbotham doubled to left. Following Sage Hurley's pop out, Justin Bush singled home the game-tying run. Mason Tafoya was then hit by a pitch, moving the winning run into scoring position. But Sean Philpotts grounded out to end the inning.
Reid retired the Saints in order again in the eighth, giving Garden City another crack to win the game. Sean Togher and Cody Kilpatrick then singled before Marshall fought off a 2-2 fastball and lifted it into left field for a walk-off RBI base hit.
