July 25, 2009 BUTLER ONCE AGAIN PICKED TO WIN JAYHAWK FOOTBALL TITLE WICHITA – Defending NJCAA Football National Champion Butler Community College was the pick of coaches to win the 2009 Jayhawk Conference Championship. The results of the annual Jayhawk Conference coaches preseason poll were announced on Saturday at the league’s media day at the Kansas Sports Hall of Fame in Wichita. Butler will be looking to win its eighth consecutive conference title and 11th in the last 12 seasons under head coach Troy Morrell, the dean of league coaches now in his 14th season. Butler returns one starter and 12 lettermen on offense and four starters and 15 lettermen on defense. The Grizzlies will open the 2009 season on Saturday, Aug. 29 when they take on Blinn College in a rematch of last season’s opening game between the last two national champions at Cessna Stadium in Wichita. Hutchinson, whose late season run propelled the Blue Dragons to a first Region VI championship game berth since 1995, was selected second. The Blue Dragons have six starters on offense and five starters on defense returning. Fort Scott, which has earned three-straight Region VI berths, was selected third in the coaches poll. The remainder of the poll had Garden City, Coffeyville, Independence, Dodge City and Highland. For the fourth straight season, the Jayhawk Conference and the Southwest Junior College Football Conference will open the season on Saturday, Aug. 29.
