KJCCC D2 Men's Basketball Awards Announced, KCKCC's BJ Stewart Named MVP
2024-25 D2 Men's Basketball All-KJCCC Teams
COLBY, Kan. – The Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference has announced the 2024-25 KJCCC D2 Men’s Basketball All-KJCCC teams and winners of the major postseason honors. The awards, which were voted on by each of the league head coaches, include five individuals bringing home major accolades.
Major award winners from the 2024-25 regular season are Most Valuable Player BJ Stewart (Kansas City Kansas), Freshman of the Year Gavin Harvey (Johnson County), Newcomer of the Year Rashad Kee (Highland), Defensive Player of the Year Steven Samuels (Johnson County), and Coach of the Year Rand Chappell (Johnson County).
Most Valuable Player: BJ Stewart (KCKCC)
The second-leading scorer in the KJCCC this season, Stewart left his mark on the league by leading the conference in made field goals, ranking second in blocks, and grabbing the fifth-most rebounds of any KJCCC D2 player. The sophomore reached double figures in scoring in 28 of 31 games played this season which included a season-high of 32 points in a non-conference game against Hutchinson while also providing 1.5 assists and 1.2 steals per contest.
Freshman of the Year: Gavin Harvey (Johnson County)
Harvey started all 33 games this season for the Cavaliers and played a league-high 984 minutes (31.7 minutes per game average) while scoring 12.2 points per contest and recording a 2.3 assist-to-turnover ratio. Leading Johnson County with 4.9 assists per game, Harvey ranked 17th in NJCAA Division 2 in total assists (162) and total minutes played (984).
Newcomer of the Year: Rashad Kee (Highland)
Kee had the fourth-highest scoring average in the KJCCC this season (15.2 points per game) and added 3.9 rebounds per game while leading the league in total made free throws (103). The sophomore scored in double figures in 22 games this season which included 10 outings with 20 or more points. Nationally, Kee ranked 58th in made free throws and 82nd in total points scored.
Defensive Player of the Year: Steven Samuels (Johnson County)
Samuels anchored a Johnson County defense that led the KJCCC in scoring defense (61.5 points per game), opponent field goal percentage (38.0), and rebounding margin (plus 9.9 rebounds per game) while recording 40 total steals and five blocks. Starting all 33 games for JCCC this season, Samuels averaged 29.2 minutes per game and helped Johnson County rank in the top 20 nationally in points per game allowed, opponents' field goal percentage, and opponents' offensive rebounding per game average.
Coach of the Year: Rand Chappell (Coach of the Year)
Chappell earns his second KJCCC Coach of the Year honors in the past three years after leading the Cavaliers to a perfect 14-0 conference mark this season and a 27-3 overall record in the regular season and number eight ranking in the final regular season NJCAA D2 Men’s Basketball Top 25 poll. JCCC ranked second in points per game in the KJCCC this season and led the conference in rebounding, rebounding margin, and points per game allowed. Nationally, Johnson County ranked 21st in NJCAA Division 2 in rebounding and third in points per game allowed (61.5 points) as the Cavaliers qualified for the NJCAA Division 2 Men’s Basketball National Tournament for a third-straight season.
