COLBY, Kan. – Finishing Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference play with an unbeaten 9-0-3 record, Cowley Community College has claimed the 2024 KJCCC Division 1 Men's Soccer regular season crown and top overall seed in the 2024 Division 1 Men's Soccer Region 6 Tournament.
Picked to win the regular season title in the preseason coaches' poll, the Tigers held up their end of the bargain by outscoring conference foes 28-9 with six shutout victories of their nine wins to finish as the only unbeaten team in conference play and eight points clear of second-place Barton. The title marks the first regular season conference championship for Cowley since the 2020 season when the Tigers earned the title following back-to-back KJCCC East Division titles in 2018 and 2019.
A tight race for second place in the standings saw Barton edge out Kansas City Kansas as the Cougars picked up a win in their final game of the regular season to finish with 22 points, one ahead of the Blue Devils who finished third with 21 points to earn the final host spot in the opening round of the Region 6 Tournament. Other teams to qualify for postseason play include four-seed Seward County (14 points), five-seed Coffeyville (11 points), and six-seed Dodge City (11 points). The Red Ravens held the tiebreaker over the Conquistadors by winning both head-to-head matchups between the two teams this season after both finished KJCCC play with a 3-7-2 record in conference action.
The 2024 NJCAA Division 1 Men's Soccer Region 6 Tournament will begin on Friday, November 1st as the single-elimination tournament will see all first-round games played at the higher seed among the two teams within the match. Opening round matches on Friday will see top-seed Cowley host sixth-seeded Dodge City in a 4 PM matchup in Arkansas City while the other matchup of the day will feature three-seed Kansas City Kansas playing host to Seward County for a 7:30 PM kickoff. The remaining opening round match is scheduled to take place on Saturday, November 2nd with Barton hosting Coffeyville in a 1 PM kickoff as three winning teams will advance to the Plains District Tournament. The 2024 NJCAA Division 1 Men's Soccer Plains District Tournament will feature three teams from NJCAA Region 6 along with the NJCAA Region 16 Champion as Crowder College will face Jefferson College on Saturday in their region championship game.
The highest remaining NJCAA Region 6 seed will host the lowest remaining NJCAA Region 6 seed in one Plains District Tournament semifinal match while the middle remaining Region 6 seed will travel to the NJCAA Region 16 champion with both matches scheduled to take place on Wednesday, November 6th. If the Plains District Tournament Championship match features two teams from NJCAA Region 6, it will take place on Sunday, November 10th at 3:30 PM on the campus of Johnson County Community College in Overland Park, Kansas. If the NJCAA Region 16 Champion advances to the Plains District Tournament Championship match, the Region 16 Champion will host the match.
