CHARLOTTE, NC – After being named the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference Division 1 Men's Soccer Goalkeeper of the Week and Women’s Cross Country Runner of the Week on Tuesday, Seward County Community College’s Bruno Mestres and Hutchinson Community College’s Faith Jepchirchir have earned NJCAA National honors for week two of their respective seasons.
Bruno Mestres (Seward County) – NJCAA Division 1 Men’s Soccer Goalkeeper of the Week
Not only did Mestres earn KJCCC Division 1 Men’s Soccer Goalkeeper of the Week for the second-straight week, but he added National Player of the Week accolades after stopping all nine shots he faced over the course of 135 minutes in net last week. Starting off his week with an in-conference match with Kansas City Kansas, Mestres turned away all six shots put on goal by the Blue Devils to help the Saints secure a scoreless draw and earn a point in the conference standings. Just four days later in a non-conference matchup with Lamar Community College, Mestres earned a result by playing the first half and turning away three shots put on goal by the Lopes as Seward took a 2-0 lead into the half and added another two goals in the second half for a 4-0 win. So far in 225 minutes in goal this season, Mestres has allowed just one goal and has made 15 saves to rank 10th in NJCAA Division 1 in saves and 12th in save percentage with a .938 save percentage.
Faith Jepchirchir (Hutchinson) – NJCAA Division 1 Women’s Cross Country Runner of the Week
A history-making performance for Hutchinson’s Faith Jepchirchir came on Friday night in the 2024 rendition of the Terry Masterson Twilight Classic as the freshman became the first in Blue Dragon women’s cross country history to win the event by running the top time in Hutchinson history in the event with a time of 18:17.00 on the three-mile course. The time was the ninth-fastest in meet history and was 16.5 seconds faster than second-place finisher Elizabeth Hernandez of Butler.
