KJCCC Cross Country Athletes of the Week - Week 1
Garden City Community College cross country runners Dennis Mutai and Shareen Cheruiyot were named Jayhawk Conference men's and women's Runners of the Week after their performances on Friday at the Terry Masterson Twilight Classic in Hutchinson.
From the start of the Terry Masterson Twilight, Dennis Mutai had a back and forth battle with Awet of Cloud County; but with a big move in the last mile, Dennis took the individual title in the men's 4-mile race with a time of 19:48.7. Mutai's performance also broke the school record for the 4-mile distance by an impressive 18 seconds. He led the Broncbusters to a 7th place finish out of 17 teams.
Terry Masterson Twilight. Shareen had a rough start to her race but kept grounded and worked her way up towards the lead pack. With a mile left, she saw teammate Valentine Lagat start to hit her limit and Shareen made her move to push towards the front and earn a 7th place finish with a time of 19:42.2; a time which sets a new school record for the 3-mile distance. Shareen’s leadership also help the Lady Broncbusters to a 7th place finish in their debut after a multiple-year hiatus of the program.
