Clark wins No. 300 at Cowley
(Cowley Sports Information) January 26, 2017 - Already the second winningest coach in the history of the Cowley College women's basketball program, Todd Clark picked up win No. 300 in the Lady Tigers' 73-51 victory over Garden City Wednesday night at W.S. Scott Auditorium.
Now in his 13th season as coach, Clark has led Cowley to at least 20 wins in each of the past 10 seasons. The Lady Tigers are well on their way to making it 11 straight seasons as they are now 16-4 overall and 12-4 in the Jayhawk Conference.
Clark was given a commemorative game ball at halftime of the Tiger men's basketball game and was joined on the court by his players and family.
"There is no way to thank all the groups of people that have helped me accomplish this, the list is too long," Clark said.
Clark praised the Tiger fans, boosters, players and assistant coaches he has had at Cowley and thanked his family for their support.
As for Wednesday's game, Cowley's big three of Amy O'Neil (20 points, six assists, five steals), Bridget Mimmo (17 points, six rebounds, five steals), and Rhianna Laing (14 points, six rebounds, two steals) were too much for the Lady Broncbusters to handle.
"Coach (Troy) Thrasher likes to refer to them as the big three and they played that way against Garden City," Clark said.
Cowley led just 16-13 at the end of the first quarter but used a 13-0 run midway through the second quarter to go in front 32-17.
Leading 38-22 at the end of the first half, Cowley saw its lead cut to 44-33 following a basket by the Broncbusters' Angel Muir with 5:22 left in the third quarter.
That would be as close as Garden City would get as Cowley led 54-42 at the end of the third quarter and out-scored the Lady Broncbusters 19-9 over the final 10 minutes of play.
The loss was Garden City's fourth in a row as the Lady Broncbusters are now 7-13 overall and 5-11 in the Jayhawk Conference. Monica Barefield led Garden City with 12 points but went just 4-of-16 from the floor while committing six turnovers.
Cowley will attempt to avenge an earlier loss against Butler Community College when they face the Lady Grizzlies Saturday at 7:30 p.m. in El Dorado. Butler handed the Lady Tigers their first loss of the season by a score of 81-74 November 22 at W.S. Scott Auditorium.
Butler's Dakota Vann had 21 points and 15 rebounds in the previous meeting between the two teams and the Lady Grizzlies out-rebounded Cowley 49-25.
"Butler is a tough match up for us and they killed us on the boards the last time we played them," Clark said. "We will have to play better to have a chance to win."
