Townsend and Myers Lead D2 Women's Basketball Selections
(KJCCC) April 15, 2021 -- 2021 KJCCC D-II Women's Basketball Awards
Johnson County Sophomore guard Jaylen Townsend led her team to an undefeated regular season while on her way to earning KJCCC D-II Women's Most Valuable Player, along with Townsend, Johnson County Head Coach, Ben Conrad earned the honor of Coach of the Year. Fort Scott Freshmen, Leikyn Walker lead the Greyhound earning Freshman of the Year for the D-II Women. Sophomore Guard Aliyah Myers helped lead the KCKCC Blue Devils to a National Tournament bid while earning D-II Women's Defensive Player of the Year
Most Valuable Player
Jaylen Townsend led the top ranked Cavaliers in scoring this season with 14.7 points per game. Townsend finished in double figures in 18 games this while shooting 45% from the field and nearly 90% from the free throw line. She accumulated 293 points overall this season leading her team to a 19-1 record.
Defensive Player of the Year
Aliyah Myers not only led the Blue Devils to a National Tournament bid but she led the conference in steals with 74 on the year, averaging 3.5 per game. Starting all 22 games for the 20-2 Blue Devils this year, Myers also averaged 5.4 rebounds per game and 13.5 points per game.
Freshman of the Year
Leikyn Walker is the first Player in Fort Scott's history to be named Freshman of the Year. Walker not only led Fort Scott, she led the conference in scoring average with 19.5 points per game. In 16 games, she reached double digits in 15 of them. Notching her career high against MCC with 34 points. Walker knocked down 40% of her shots from the field while averaging 6 board per game.
Coach of the Year
For the first time since 2017, Johnson County head coach Ben Conrad led his team to an undefeated regular season, regular season KJCCC D-II championship and a second place finish in the Region IV tournament. Conrad and the Cavaliers finished the regular season with a 19-1 while earning an At-Large bid to play in the NJCAA D-II National Tournament.
