Nine KJCCC Women's Basketball Players Earn All-America Accolades

CHARLOTTE, NC – Nine Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference Women’s Basketball players have earned NJCAA All-America accolades, with three players being named First-Team All-Americans following the announcements of the NJCAA Division 1 and Division 2 Women’s Basketball All-America teams on Wednesday, April 9th.
The nine players represent seven different KJCCC institutions, with both Dodge City and Johnson County having two players each named to the All-America teams while Hutchinson, Barton, Cowley, Highland, and Neosho County all had one player each named to the All-America teams.
Hailey Jackson (Hutchinson) NJCAA Division 1 Women’s Basketball First Team All-American
KJCCC Division 1 Women’s Basketball Most Valuable Player, Hailey Jackson earns First-Team NJCAA All-America honors after finishing her Hutchinson career as a 1,000-point scorer for the Blue Dragons. Jackson led the KJCCC this season in scoring by averaging 18.3 points per contest to go along with 8.4 rebounds per game and 1.7 assists per contest while helping Hutchinson to a co-KJCCC regular season championship and a 21-3 mark in the KJCCC regular season, Jackson had 30 games in double figures this season which included four 30-point outings and a season-high 33 in a 58-50 win at Seward County on March 1.
Layla-J Cameron (Dodge City) NJCAA Division 1 Women’s Basketball Second Team All-American
One of three players for Dodge City to start all 36 games this season, Cameron was the second-leading scorer on a Conquistador team that set a program record for wins (31) and the first appearance in the NJCAA Division 1 Women’s Basketball Final Four in program history by scoring 14.1 points per game. The sophomore also averaged 5.0 rebounds per game and had 125 total assists which ranked third in the KJCCC this season while leading the league in free-throw percentage (86.4 percent, 95-110). Defensively, Cameron added 61 total steals and nine blocks for Dodge City.
Vivian Onugha (Barton) NJCAA Division 1 Women’s Basketball Second Team All-American
Barton’s all-time single-season and career rebounding leader, Onugha was a three-time KJCCC D1 Women’s Basketball Player of the Week award winner this season and the NJCAA D1 Women’s Basketball National Player of the Week on January 15th after leading the KJCCC in rebounds (16.1 rebounds per game). The sophomore also averaged 17.4 points per game, which ranked second in the conference, while leading all NJCAA D1 Women’s Basketball players in rebounding and ranking 26th in scoring average.
Elysa Martinez (Cowley) NJCAA Division 1 Women’s Basketball Honorable Mention All-American
The KJCCC D1 Women’s Basketball Newcomer of the Year, Martinez finished the season with the third-highest scoring average in the KJCCC (17.3) while shooting 42.7 percent from the floor and a conference-best 85.8 percent free throw shooting by going 109-127 from the charity stripe. The Ackerly, Texas native also dished out 4.0 assists per game and averaged 4.3 rebounds per contest to go along with a 2.2 assist-to-turnover ratio and a league-leading 120 steals. Scoring double-figures in 28 of 30 games this season, Martinez had 10 or more points in each of the last 17 games of the year, which included a career-best 31 in the Region 6 Tournament opener for the Tigers against Independence.
Shorna Preston (Dodge City) NJCAA Division 1 Women’s Basketball Honorable Mention All-American
KJCCC D1 Women’s Basketball Co-Defensive Player of the Year, Preston ranked second in the KJCCC in rebounding per game (9.8 rebounds per game) while recording 103 steals and 67 blocks, both of which also rank in the top two in the KJCCC this season. Nationally, Preston ranked sixth in the NJCAA in total blocks and eighth in steals while also ranking in the top 30 in rebounds per game. As a team, Dodge City held opponents to 53.4 points per game heading into the National Tournament when Preston was in the lineup and the fifth-best opponent field goal percentage (31.2 percent) in the NJCAA with 24 games holding their opponent under 60 points.
Cameron McNamara (Highland) NJCAA Division 2 Women’s Basketball First Team All-American
KJCCC D2 Women’s Basketball Most Valuable Player, McNamara became just the second player in Highland history to eclipse the 1,000-point mark in a Scottie uniform while leading the Scotties to a 24-4 overall record in the regular season before helping HCC pick up three postseason wins on their way to becoming NJCAA Region 6 Tournament Champions to qualify for the 2025 NJCAA Division 2 Women’s Basketball National Tournament. McNamara led the KJCCC in scoring average with a 20.1 point per game average and ranked fifth in rebounding average with 8.0 rebounds per contest. In 13 conference games, McNamara averaged 19.2 points, 8.3 rebounds, 3.7 steals, and 2.6 blocks per game as the Scotties went 10-4 in conference play to finish tied for second in the league.
Layla Scott (Johnson County) NJCAA Division 2 Women’s Basketball First Team All-American
Earning KJCCC D2 Women’s Basketball Freshman of the Year honors, Scott made an immediate impact on the court by finishing the year second in scoring average in the KJCCC by scoring 16.3 points per contest and grabbing 3.9 rebounds per contest. Starting 33 of 35 games for the Cavaliers this season, Scott helped JCCC go unbeaten for a second-straight regular season and qualify for their fifth-consecutive NJCAA Division 2 Women’s Basketball National Tournament as JCCC went on to win the third NJCAA Division 2 Women’s Basketball National Title in program history while being named the NJCAA Division 2 Women’s Basketball National Tournament Most Valuable Player.
Taliyah Scott (Johnson County) NJCAA Division 2 Women’s Basketball Second Team All-American
A second-team All-KJCCC selection in her sophomore campaign, Scott was the lone Cavalier to start at least 34 games this season while averaging 7.9 points per game and recording a 2.3 assist-to-turnover ratio for JCCC. Leading the KJCCC in assists with 211, Scott ranked ninth nationally in assists per game (6.0) and third in total assists while playing the 21st most minutes of any NJCAA D2 player this season (975 minutes).
Jiyani Thompson (Neosho County) NJCAA Division 2 Women’s Basketball Honorable Mention All-American
The third-highest scorer in KJCCC D2 women’s basketball this season, Thompson was a First-Team All-KJCCC selection after averaging 15.1 points and 2.4 rebounds per game this season for Neosho County who spent most of the season ranked inside the top 25. Thompson recorded the fourth-best three-point field goal percentage in the KJCCC (35.1 percent) and was eighth in total steals (58) while helping NCCC go 19-8 overall and finish with their third-straight 20-plus win season.
