Dodge City Makes Program History, Wins First NJCAA Region 6 Tournament Title
Dodge City Release | All-Tournament Team
HAYS, Kan. – For the first time in program history, the Dodge City Community College women’s basketball team won the NJCAA Region 6 Women’s Basketball Tournament title to punch their ticket to the 2025 NJCAA Division 1 Women’s Basketball National Tournament with a dominant 55-35 win over Coffeyville Community College.
Entering the tournament as the number one seed, Dodge City took care of business in all three of their postseason games with their wins coming by an average margin of 20 points per game and two of the wins coming against nationally ranked foes. The automatic berth to the NJCAA Division 1 Women’s Basketball National Tournament will mark the third-straight appearance for Dodge City in the National Tournament, with the previous two appearances seeing the Conquistadors pick up one win compared to two defeats.
Entering Friday’s semifinal round with all four of the top seeds advancing to Gross Coliseum for the neutral site portion of the tournament, DC3 opened up play with a 67-58 win over fourth-seeded Butler Community College with the Conquistadors doubling up the Grizzlies 20-10 in the opening quarter and never looking back to lead wire-to-wire and lead by as many as 19 points throughout the game. In the second semifinal on Friday night, a thriller between number two seed Hutchinson Community College and number three seed Coffeyville saw the Red Ravens jump out to a 15-8 lead in the opening quarter while holding the Blue Dragons to just 14 first-half points to take a 25-14 lead into the halftime break. After taking their largest lead of the game at 31-16 with 5:58 left in the third quarter, Coffeyville was limited to just three field goals over the final 15-plus minutes of action which allowed Hutchinson to get back into the game and pull within three at 45-42 with 3:05 remaining. Both defenses locked down the rest of the way as neither team would be able to score by going a combined 0-7 from the field which included two different potential game-tying three-point attempts from HCC in the final 10 seconds to see their chance at back-to-back Region 6 Tournament titles come to an end.
In the title game the next day, it was once again Dodge City that got off to a quick start by scoring 14 of the first 16 points to take a double-digit lead six minutes into the game and carry an 18-5 lead into the second quarter after limiting Coffeyville to a 20 percent field goal percentage in the opening period. Things did not get any better for the Red Ravens in the second quarter with the Conquistadors continuing to push the pace and control the tempo in a contrast of styles between teams as DC3 took a 31-12 lead into the half and added to their lead in the third quarter after an eight-point quarter from Mia Jordan to put the score at 46-24 heading into the final period. The massive deficit proved well too much for Coffeyville to put together any realistic run to close the gap as five quick points for Dodge City ran the lead out to 51-24 with 8:43 remaining and allowed the Conquistadors to utilize their bench to avoid injuries heading into the National Tournament to close out the 20-point victory.
Leading the way throughout the weekend for the Conquistadors was Tournament MVP Mia Jordan who scored 25 points and grabbed 15 rebounds across the two-games in addition to adding two blocks, one steal, and one assist. Joining Jordan on the All-Tournament team was teammate Shorna Preston who put together a game-high 17-point outing on Friday against Butler before flirting with a triple-double in Saturday’s championship game by scoring six points to go along with nine rebounds and eight assists despite dealing with foul trouble in the second half.
The only questions that remain for Dodge City is their official seeding and opponent in the NJCAA Division 1 Women’s Basketball National Tournament, which is set to take place March 25-April 1 at the Ford Wyoming Center in Casper, Wyoming. Last season, Dodge City was the number 18 seed and picked up a 75-57 upset over 15-seed East Georgia State in the opening round before being unable to fend off a furious second-half comeback from number two-seed Wabash Valley College as the Conquistador season ended in heartbreak with a 69-68 loss in the second round. The final NJCAA Division 1 Women’s Basketball Top 25 poll of the season, which was released on Monday, March 3rd, saw Dodge City ranked seventh and in position to receive a potential first-round bye in this year’s rendition of the 24-team tournament. The official tournament field will be released at 5 PM on Sunday, March 16th live on the NJCAA Network (www.njcaa.org/network).
