Cowley Women's Soccer Finishes KJCCC Play Unbeaten, Wins Regular Season Title
COLBY, Kan. – Finishing the regular season with an unbeaten 11-0-4 record, the Cowley College women’s soccer team has won the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference Division 1 Women’s Soccer regular season crown and will enter the 2025 NJCAA D1 Women’s Soccer Plains District Tournament as the top overall seed.
Winning their first conference crown since sharing the 2021 KJCCC D1 Women’s Soccer regular season title, the Tigers went 11-0-3 in conference play while earning shutout wins in six of their 11 victories against conference opponents. Cowley played to a scoreless draw against Garden City, as well as 2-2 ties against Hutchinson and Butler to account for their three draws in conference play. Allowing a conference-best 11 goals this season, Cowley outscored opponents 45-11 and is averaging 2.20 goals per contest while taking over 12 shots per game offensively. Led by the conference leader in goals, Sara Cortes, the Tigers have two players that rank in the top five in goals (Cortes, 16 goals, Saki Sanno, 10 goals) as well as goalkeeper Julia Suelly, who boasts the second-best goals-against average (0.69) in the KJCCC.
Taking second in the KJCCC regular standings to secure the number two seed was Hutchinson with 28 points, one point ahead of third-place Butler. The two teams combined for 16 wins in conference this season, with the Blue Dragons going 8-2-4 while Butler finished the conference season with an 8-3-3 mark. Also earning a home first-round playoff game was Barton as the Cougars finished tied for fourth with Garden City before winning the tiebreaker by defeating the Broncbusters 5-2 in their first head-to-head matchup that was followed by a 1-1 draw. Garden City will be the number five seed in the upcoming NJCAA D1 Women’s Soccer Plains District Tournament, with Seward County earning the six seed, Dodge City the seven seed, and Coffeyville the eight seed.
Tournament action is scheduled to get underway on Friday, October 31st, as the opening round of the tournament will take place across three days. Opening the action on Friday is number three seed Butler hosting number six seed Seward County in El Dorado at 1 PM, while Saturday, November 1st, will see top-seeded Cowley host Coffeyville at 2 PM and number two-seed Hutchinson play host to seventh-seeded Dodge City at 4 PM. The final opening-round matchup will take place on Sunday, November 2nd, when fourth-seeded Barton takes on fifth-seeded Garden City in a 7:30 PM matchup on the campus of Fort Hays State University in Hays, Kansas. Plains District Tournament semifinal matches are scheduled to take place on Wednesday, November 5th, with the Championship match set for Saturday, November 8th at 2 PM on the campus of Kansas City Kansas Community College in Kansas City, Kansas. The winner of the 2025 NJCAA Division 1 Women’s Soccer Plains District Tournament will earn an automatic qualification into the 2025 NJCAA Division 1 Women’s Soccer National Tournament, held November 16-22 in Enid, Oklahoma.
