Three KJCCC Volleyball Teams Set To Compete In NJCAA D2 Volleyball National Tournament
COLBY, Kan. – Along with NJCAA Division 2 Volleyball Plains District A Champion Cowley Community College and Plains District B Champion Johnson County, an at-large bid awarded to Kansas City Kansas Community College has given the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference three teams that have qualified for the 2024 NJCAA Division 2 Volleyball National Tournament.
COLBY, Kan. – Along with NJCAA Division 2 Volleyball Plains District A Champion Cowley College and Plains District B Champion Johnson County, an at-large bid awarded to Kansas City Kansas Community College has given the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference three teams that have qualified for the 2024 NJCAA Division 2 Volleyball National Tournament.
With action set to begin on Wednesday, November 20th inside the Alliant Energy Powerhouse Arena in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, 20 teams will begin their quest over the span of four days to earn an elusive National Title as Cowley Community College will look to defend their 2023 Championship by entering the tournament as the top overall seed. Also from the KJCCC, Johnson County has earned the number seven seed in the 20-team tournament while KCKCC was seeded 11th as all three will be in action for their opening matches of the tournament on Wednesday.
Cowley enters the 2024 National Tournament with a perfect 36-0 record after going 41-0 last season on their way to third National Championship in program history as the last loss for the Tigers came in the 2022 NJCAA Division 2 Volleyball National Tournament to Grand Rapids Community College. On the season, Cowley has dropped just four sets with 34 of their wins coming by 3-0 sweep as nine of their victories have come over teams that are in the 2024 National Tournament field.
Johnson County has appeared to have righted the ship again after suffering a four-match losing streak in mid-October as all four losses came against teams in the National Tournament field before winning five of their past six matches to head into the National Tournament. Holding an overall record of 27-6 overall, four of the six losses for the Cavaliers came to NJCAA Division 2 Volleyball National Tournament teams as JCCC is making their fifth-straight appearance at the National Tournament which includes third place finishes in 2021 and 2023 along with a fourth-place finish in 2022 and the 2020 NJCAA Division 2 Volleyball National Title.
Putting together a strong 24-7 overall record with a loss in the Plains District B Tournament Championship match to Johnson County, KCKCC saw six of their seven losses this season come to NJCAA Division 2 Volleyball National Tournament teams to earn a coveted at-large berth into the National Tournament along with five-seed Heartland, six seed Gulf Coast State, and 10 seed Iowa Central. This season, the Blue Devils rank 13th in NJCAA Division 2 Volleyball in service aces (320) and 17th in kills per set (12.04) along with 27th in blocks per set (1.97).
Cowley will await their opponent in their opening match of the tournament as the Tigers will await the winner of 16-seed Harford and 17-seed Milwaukee Area Tech for a 5:30 PM (CST) match on Wednesday evening with the winner taking on the winner of eight-seed Illinois Central and nine-seed Pensacola State. Johnson County meanwhile will take on 10th-seeded Iowa Central in the first match between teams this season at 3:30 PM (CST) with a potential matchup against two-seed Parkland awaiting with a win while KCKCC will also have a 3:30 PM (CST) matchup when they take on six-seed Gulf Coast State College with the winner likely facing off against three-seed Kirkwood in the National Tournament quarterfinals.
