Bucs Win Overtime Thriller; Advance to National Championship Game

CASPER, Wyo. – The Shelton State women's basketball team will play for its first national championship.

No.8 seed Shelton State (31-4) knocked off No. 4 seed Dodge City Community College 60-59 in an overtime thriller in the semifinals of the 2025 Credit Union I NJCAA Women's Division I Basketball Championship presented by Zurich at the Ford Wyoming Center on Monday night.

It was the first overtime game of the 2025 national tournament and the Bucs first overtime game of the season. Dodge City dropped to 1-2 in overtime games.

The Bucs came up with two defensive stands in the final 10 seconds to advance to the championship game for the first time in school history.

Dodge City forward Layla J Cameron's potential game-winning basket was blocked out of bounds by Bucs sophomore forward CoCo Thomas with nine second left.  The Conquistadors went to Cameron one more time and her jumper fell short as time expired giving the Bucs the one-point win.

Sophomore point guard K.K. Hobdy put the Bucs ahead for good with a three-pointer at the top of the key with 2:10 left int the overtime.  Shorna Preston's layup with 1:10 pulled Dodge City to within one at 60-59. The Bucs missed a jump shot with 25 seconds to play, giving Dodge one last shot.

Shelton State won the game despite scoring nine total points in the fourth quarter and overtime.

After a dominating third quarter, the Bucs took a 51-38 lead into the final 10 minutes. Dodge City quickly grabbed momentum and scored the first 13 points of the quarter to tie the game at 51-51 on Konstantina Mantziori's three-pointer with 4:36 left in the game.

Hobdy hit a layup with 2:47 left in regulation to give the Bucs a 53-51 lead. Cameron hit game-tying layup with 46 second to play.  Both teams traded turnovers in the final 30 seconds and freshman guard Janiyah Bone missed a three-pointer as time expired.

The Bucs outscored Dodge City 23-11 in the third quarter to take a 51-38 lead into the final quarter.

Dodge City (31-5) led 18-14 at the end of the first quarter.

Shelton State held Dodge City to nine second-quarter points to take a 28-27 halftime lead.

Shelton State had three players in double figures in the win. Hobdy led all scorers with 19 points. She also added six assists, four rebounds, four steals and two blocked shots. Freshman Alana Obianozie added 12 points. Thomas had 11 points and eight rebounds.

Dodge City had three players in double figures, led by Cameron's 17 points and eight rebounds.
